The blood pressure drug shortage is a pressing issue that is only set to worsen, with supply chains at risk of collapsing. A pharmacy leader has issued an urgent warning to Brits, as manufacturers are pulling products from the market due to low prices and insufficient reimbursement from the UK government. Blood pressure medication, such as ramipril and propranolol, is crucial for reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. However, pharmacies have struggled to acquire a reliable supply, leaving some patients without the medication they need. The chief executive of the Independent Pharmacies Association, Dr Leyla Hannabeck, has warned that the situation is 'getting worse' due to the low prices of generic medicines, some as low as 3p, which is far below the cost of a pack of Smarties. This has made it unviable for manufacturers to distribute their medicines in the UK, leading to reduced supply. During supply shortages, prices can suddenly jump up by a whopping 500%, leaving many pharmacies out of pocket if the government reimbursement is insufficient. For example, a pack of Aspirin, which is very commonly used, has gone up to over £3 overnight, leaving many pharmacies unable to afford buying the usual quantities. Additionally, pharmacies only get compensation two months after they have dispensed the medicines, which means they are left out of pocket for two months and during a time when they are already struggling financially due to funding issues. While pharmacists are doing all they can to supply substitute medications where appropriate, the situation is becoming increasingly serious as it is becoming less affordable for manufacturers to supply these medicines at such cheap prices. The government needs to listen and address the issue of the medicines supply chain at risk of collapsing. This comes as NHS Grampian warns of a nationwide shortage of co-codamol 30/500 tablets, used to relieve severe levels of pain that cannot be helped by standard painkillers. The healthcare service has stated that supplies will be limited from early February 2026 until the summer, and patients cannot be simply switched over to other variations of the drug. This shortage highlights the urgent need for action to ensure that patients have access to the medications they need.
